Head is one of the most vital parts (Marma) of the body and a route to all motor and sensory activities. Regulating its functions is the key of managing all psychosomatic and neurological disorders.

Sirodhara is a part of Panchakarma (specialized five treatments) treatments in Ayurvedic Medicine.

     

Definition: continuously pouring of stream of medicated oil, decoction, milk or butter milk etc. on the forehead of the patient from a specified height, for a specific time is called Shirodhara. 
This procedure is practiced as:

  • Head bath
  • Whole body bath
  • Local bath

Effects: anxiolytic, adaptogenic, tranquilizing, relaxing, sedative, hypnotic, passive meditation without altering consciousness, calm vitiated Vata, and improves mental functions like learning, memory, behaviour. 

Indications for use: headache, insomnia, parasomnia, anxiety disorders,
depressive illnesses, schizophrenia, motor neuron disease, cerebral ataxia, heart diseases like hypertension, skin disorders like psoriasis, psychosis, epilepsy, fainting, confusion, alcoholism etc.
